K9 Web Protection is a free online protection program meant to limit malware and access to certain websites. This is useful if you're a parent or business owner and want to keep people from using certain websites, and it can also protect your network against some incoming threats. Despite being free, it has some sophisticated tools you'll be happy to see.

Primary Features

K9 Web Protection is primarily focused on limiting Internet usage and access to certain websites. There are many tools for outright blocking certain websites, limiting access by only allowing a specified amount of time on a website and scanning for online activity. There's even a contextual tool that allows you to block certain keywords, like adult keywords or social media ones. You'll find an exceptions list that allows specific websites, such as a social media page your team needs or a website your child needs for research.

It can block malware as well, but this is mostly from restricting vulnerable websites that are known for having viruses. This could be torrent sites and some social media outlets.

Timed Restrictions

This is a handy feature if you want certain restrictions at specific times. For example, you don't mind if your child has limited Internet access after dinner, but you want them to stop browsing websites when bedtime approaches. You can use the NightGuard mode to block all access at evening, or you can manually set the restrictions to start and end at specific times.

While it takes a few minutes to set the manual restrictions, this is good if you have one computer and want different rules for different times of the day.

Categories

Much like with the timed restrictions, there is category-based blocking. You can either choose pre-set categories or manually set the categories you want to block. For example, the "Default" setting will block adult content, social media outlets, peer-to-peer sites and more. K9 Web Protection does a wonderful job of showing you which categories are blocked based on the security level.

If there are certain categories you want to allow, then there is a manual setting that allows you to choose the exact categories you want to block. This gives you control over the program based on your exact needs.

Reports

The reports aren't extremely detailed, but you can generate a report based on how many websites have been blocked, what websites other users are attempting to access and how many times someone tried to override the system. This will show you which websites someone is trying to access and if users were attempting to bypass the security software.

There is a separate report for admin actions. This makes it easy to separate your actions from what other users are doing on the Internet.
